Faith Ringgold - Emotional Storytelling

Picture
As an artist, Faith Ringgold synthesized all of her influences to develop her own unique style. She pursued her strong desire to create and be an artist and broke down barriers in the process.
Many of her pieces addressed the social inequality that she experienced in her life. See the example below, "The Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles"

The Woman in the video are listed below. Please see the short video on each of them:

Her work was full of stories and symbols, reflecting the traditions of her African and Caribbean heritage, of breaking the social normal and striving for equality. See the below image and video of "Dancing in the Louvre"

As a artist, she developed and applied her style to painting, quilting, sculpture and children's books. Below notice her style while you watch the read-aloud of the children's book "Tar Beach"

Your emotional storytelling project

 1. Come up with 5 childhood memories:

For Example:
  1. Dinner table laughing and my brother had milk coming out his nose he was laughing so hard
  2. Painting rock wall at my Grandparent's house
  3. Crashing my bike into the curb!
  4. Making lunches in one big assembly line the night before school
  5. Making a doll vacuum out of a eyedropper

2. Sketch around a couple of designs and ideas to see which memory your want to select.
Picture
3. Decide which story you want to choose. I choose the one of painting the rock wall. Here is an old photo of us washing the car next to the wall.

4. Review the composition video that we used for Fauvism . Revise your sketch as needed to get a strong composition and eye movement.
Overall composition eye movement created a triangle path:

5. Review the two color as symbols and emotions videos before you color in your sketch. Once you have reviewed these, go ahead and add color to your sketch.
For your final work, explore and research mix media for your illustration. Try Watercolor, Marker, Paper collage, rubbings, etc. Mixed it up to see if you can emphasize the mood of your image. Here are some examples:
